Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the landscape of international trade, according to a new report by the World Trade Organization (WTO). The organization estimates that by 2040, AI could boost global trade volumes by 34–37% and increase global GDP by 12–13%.

The key driver is reduced transaction costs. AI automates logistics, streamlines customs procedures, and helps companies adapt to changing market demand faster.

The technology also simplifies compliance with complex regulations. For instance, AI algorithms can track the carbon footprint of products — a crucial factor for exporters to the EU.

AI-powered translation tools and analytical models enable small businesses to enter foreign markets, overcoming linguistic and technical barriers.

The WTO notes that AI enhances supply chain transparency, predicts disruptions, and optimizes routes, minimizing risks and losses.

However, the report warns that without inclusive policies, AI could widen the digital divide, as access to advanced technologies remains limited in low-income countries.

Automation also poses employment risks. The WTO calls for reforms in education and reskilling to mitigate potential social impacts.

To ensure sustainable growth, the report recommends new international agreements — including tariff reductions on AI components, knowledge exchange, and harmonized standards.

The WTO emphasizes that AI is not merely a tool but a transformative force reshaping the structure of global trade. Its impact will depend on how effectively countries adapt their policies.

AI should be seen as the infrastructure of future trade — powerful yet demanding coordinated global action.
