Streaming giant Netflix has released its first detailed guidelines on the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in content production. The document is aimed at studios, contractors, and partners working on Netflix projects.
While acknowledging the creative potential of neural networks, Netflix emphasizes that AI must be used responsibly and transparently. Any GenAI application requires prior notification — especially when final materials or personal data are involved.
Key principles include a ban on copyright violations, mandatory use of secure corporate environments, and a strict prohibition on storing, reusing, or training models on generated content. AI-generated materials must remain temporary.
Netflix strictly forbids replacing actors, voices, or crew members with digital replicas without explicit consent. This applies to visual likenesses, synthetic voices, and digital doubles.
Ethical boundaries are also reinforced: it is unacceptable to create scenes, dialogues, or videos that could be mistaken for real events. Fake news or fabricated statements from public figures are explicitly banned.
Studios are also prohibited from using GenAI to generate core story elements — characters, visual worlds, or artistic decisions — if they appear in the final product. These cases require separate legal review.
Even when using secure corporate tools, studios must avoid uploading unapproved materials — scripts, images, or crew data — into neural networks. This applies to both internal and third-party systems.
Any AI-generated visual or audio fragment included in the final cut must undergo legal review. Even background elements like posters or documents must be vetted if they influence the narrative.
Netflix permits GenAI use during early development — for moodboards, references, and idea pitching. These are considered low-risk if all principles are followed. Still, partners must notify the platform in advance.
This new policy reflects Netflix’s effort to set standards in a fast-evolving landscape where technology often outpaces regulation. The company advocates for balance: AI as a tool, not a substitute for human creativity.
