In 2024, fraud became one of the most widespread forms of crime. New schemes keep emerging, leading people to unknowingly share their banking details with criminals and lose their savings.

In July this year, a massive data breach affected about 16 million Kazakhstani citizens. Such incidents make scammers especially convincing: when someone knows your full name, address, or even ID number, it becomes harder not to trust them.

Factcheck.kz spoke with Yelzhan Kabyshev, Head of Legal Practice at the Eurasian Digital Foundation, who explained the main fraud methods and how to stay protected.

According to him, the most common approach is social engineering. Among the most frequent techniques are:

  • Phishing: fake calls pretending to be from a bank, law enforcement, or state bodies;

  • Fake websites and forms: tricking victims into entering card details or confirmation codes.

Basic recommendations to reduce the risk of financial loss include:

  1. Don’t share data with outsiders — never disclose passwords, codes, or card details, and avoid suspicious links.

  2. Control access to banking data — use limits, a separate card for online payments, and avoid public Wi-Fi.

  3. Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication — preferably passkeys or authenticator apps.

  4. Keep systems and apps updated, especially financial ones.

  5. Store your e-signature only in eGov Mobile — biometric protection lowers risks.

  6. Enable a “credit freeze” — blocking loans issued in your name, available via eGov or 1414.

“Keep track of how your personal data circulates. The law requires data owners and operators to use protective measures and process only the ‘necessary and sufficient’ amount — demand compliance,” Kabyshev noted.

He also reminded that a simple yet effective habit is using ATMs located inside bank branches and covering the keypad with your hand. This basic measure is also recommended by the Agency for Regulation and Development of the Financial Market (ARDFM).
