For the fourth year in a row, on International Data Protection Day, we hosted an event with a regional focus on Kazakhstan and took part in the international program together with our partners.
This year, we believe we managed to highlight the protection of personal data, especially given the significant changes in the country’s digital legislation.
Highlights of the discussions:
Kazakhstani experts emphasized that a new architecture of digital legislation is being formed. Over the past year, the Digital Code and the Law on AI were adopted, introducing fundamental legal innovations — human rights are now declared not as a secondary element, but as a core principle.
It is crucial that the Law on AI includes a provision stating that algorithmic decisions (in banks, government services, businesses, etc.) do not exclude the importance of human judgment. In case of an AI error, citizens can file a complaint and request human review.
Speakers also stressed the importance of obtaining informed consent for personal data processing by businesses and digital services, which is enshrined in new legislation. This applies equally to automated decisions — individuals must be notified when their request is processed by AI.
Experts from around the world highlighted the importance of freedom of information and public data on internet shutdowns. They warned about the risks of AI being used for hidden or excessive surveillance of citizens. Major digital platforms now bear special responsibility for user data security, given the widespread collection of information by AI.
Such discussions help businesses adapt to new rules and empower each of us to consciously manage our digital footprint. In a world where data is called “the new oil,” privacy protection becomes an essential skill.
