A pilot project for the use of 10G PON technology — wired Internet with speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s — has been launched in Astana.
The test zone is open in the Forte coworking space on Dostyk Street, 8/1. Visitors can check the connection speed via Speedtest or download resource-intensive applications.
The project is being implemented with the participation of Huawei Technologies Kazakhstan, Astana Innovations, Beeline and ForteBank. The initiative was supported by the city akimat.
Unlike 4/5G mobile networks, the number “10” does not indicate the generation, but the maximum data transfer speed.
According to the results of the demonstration, the download and upload speed reached 9490 Mbit/s — this is enough for 8K video streaming, cloud gaming and telemedicine.
The technology uses the existing fiber-optic infrastructure. To implement it, it is enough to replace terminals and equipment, without large-scale network relocation.
10G PON is already used in a number of countries, but in Kazakhstan this is the first public test available to a wide audience.
Deputy Akim of Astana Evgeny Glotov noted that the development of the urban environment is impossible without a reliable digital platform.
Chairman of Astana Innovations Gizat Amirgali called the launch of 10G a step towards the practical implementation of modern services in everyday life.
The pilot project is open until September 19. After the tests are completed, the possibility of large-scale implementation of the technology in the capital and national networks will be assessed. For users, this is a chance to personally test the new communication standard and evaluate how much it differs from conventional Internet solutions.
