At the 82nd session of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in Bangkok, a resolution was unanimously adopted by 52 member states to establish the ESCAP Asia‑Pacific Centre for Digital Solutions for Sustainable Development in Almaty.

The Centre will be the sixth ESCAP institution, alongside similar structures in Japan, China, Korea, India, and Iran.

It is conceived as a neutral international platform under the UN for sharing digital solutions in public services and governance.

According to Kazakhstan’s permanent representative to ESCAP, Margulan Baimukhan, the resolution is the result of negotiations that lasted more than five years. During this time, seven studies were conducted and three interim resolutions adopted. A key milestone was the Digital Inclusion Conference in Astana in 2024.

A wide range of countries joined the initiative — from Azerbaijan and China to Fiji and Sri Lanka.

The Almaty Centre will be ESCAP’s largest institution, with a planned capacity of up to 130 people. A repository of best digital practices will be created, with special attention to supporting least developed countries, landlocked states, and small island nations.

For Kazakhstan, this is an opportunity to attract technology, expertise, and specialists, as well as to strengthen international cooperation in IT.

The initiative also creates conditions for exporting domestic digital solutions and attracting resources from international financial institutions, according to the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development.
