Most dating apps violate your digital privacy

Researchers from Mozilla came to this conclusion after studying 25 popular applications, of which 22 received the “Privacy not enabled” mark, which is the lowest rating in the company’s rating.

According to researchers, back in 2021, most dating services simply did not meet Mozilla's criteria for data privacy, and at the moment the situation is even more alarming.

Lots of data = lots of risks

“Dating apps claim that the more personal information you provide, the more likely you are to find love. We cannot verify whether this is indeed the case. However, we know for sure that most of these applications do not adequately protect this data,” Mozilla said in a press release.

It is emphasized that if such information gets to third parties, such as data brokers, this can lead to very serious consequences.

The Mozilla report found that most apps share or sell personal data for advertising purposes. In particular, Bumble's policies are very vague about the transfer/sale of personal data to third parties.

Among the data that such applications most often collect is geolocation. Most apps, including Hinge, Tinder, OKCupid, Match, Plenty of Fish, accurately collected geolocation data (some even did it in the background).

The researchers note that given the amount of information collected, such programs must take special care to protect it.

AI integration will only make things worse

Half of the dating apps in question are already using AI, for reasons that range from potentially good (like fake detectors) to ridiculous (where algorithms discriminate against some individuals in favor of others).

Match Group, the largest dating app company, used images from OkCupid to train facial recognition software without users' knowledge or consent.

It is worth noting that, according to the research company SimilarWeb, Kazakhstanis also actively use services (both on iOS and Android), to which Mozilla has filed claims for improperly respecting user privacy.

Thus, among the most popular dating platforms in Kazakhstan are Tinder, Badoo and Bumble.
